Blockbuster to favor Blu-ray high-definition discs over rival HD DVD format
By The Associated Press
Sunday, June 17, 2007

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Blockbuster Inc. will rent high-definition DVDs only in the Blu-ray format in 1,450 stores when it expands its high-def offerings next month, dealing a major blow to the rival HD DVD format.

The move, being announced Monday, could be the first step in resolving a format war that has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market.

Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time.

"The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing," Matthew Smith, senior vice president of merchandising at Blockbuster, told The Associated Press.

Blockbuster will continue to rent HD DVD titles in the original 250 locations and online, the Dallas-based company said.

The decision was helped in large part by the lopsided availability of titles in Blu-ray, Smith said. All major studios except one are releasing films in Blu-ray, with several, including The Walt Disney Co., releasing exclusively in Blu-ray. Only Universal Studios, which is owned by General Electric Co., exclusively supports HD DVD.

Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., and Paramount Pictures, which is owned by Viacom Inc., release films in both formats.

"When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that," Smith said.

The rollout of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 game console, which comes standard with a Blu-ray drive, also helped give the format momentum, Smith said.

Blockbuster's decision, while significant on it's own, could boost Blu-ray even more if other retailers follow suit.

"It will help shift the balance toward Blu-ray, clearly," said Richard Doherty, president of The Envisioneering Gr oup, a research company.

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group said Blockbuster's decision was shortsighted and skewed by the success of films released by Blu-ray studios in the first three months of the year. The group said HD DVD has since gained momentum, selling more players and popular titles such as "The 40-Year Old Virgin" and "The Matrix" trilogy.

"I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the group.

The two formats have been battling it out since they both hit the market last year. Studios hope the high-definition discs, with their sharper picture and more room for interactive special features and games, will replace standard definition DVDs.

The formats are incompatible and neither will play on standard DVD players, although standard DVDs can be viewed with either a Blu-ray or HD DVD player.

The Blu-ray camp has b een helped by the release of such huge hits as "Casino Royale," "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Spider-Man" coming out exclusively in its format.

As the battle has unfolded, the price of the high-definition players needed to show the movies has plummeted. Toshiba Corp., the major supporter of HD DVD, is selling its player for $299 with a rebate, down from $499 when it first went on sale.

Sony, which is pushing Blu-ray, recently slashed the price of its player by more than half to $499. The player retailed for $1,000 when it first was introduced.

The format that allows one to record Hi-Def and put it onto a Hi-Def disc will be the winner IMHO. If HD-DVD goes away and Blu-Ray won't allow Hi-Def disc creation on computer or stand alone recorders then another format will come around that will.

Won't people eventually want to put HD camcorder video onto some sort of Hi-Def disc that they can playback?

Both formats have recordable discs available. At this point, more of the computer companies are backing Blu-Ray disc since that format has larger storage sizes.

How hard is it now to make a Hi-Def Disc and is one format ahead as far as availability and ease of use?

I was thinking perhaps Hi-Def disc creation for the home computer would give us an insight as to which format would win.

I think the Blockbuster announcement is the biggest development yet for those that want only one format. Market penetration has been pitiful for both so far and Blockbuster customers should notice this and perhaps make a decision. Of course if Universal continues to be HD DVD exclusively, nothing really changes, only the gap in favor of Blu-ray widens.

I hate this shit. One company does this, the other does that. Why can't they release everything in both formats and let the technology decide???

What's going to happen is that the format with the most studio support (BD) will end up winning, which will be a big burn out for all of the folks who bought HD-DVD stuff.

There should have been only one format. These people will never learn.

I HATE FORMAT WARS!!!! :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I agree. That's why I'll wait for an all in one player for $200. :) Or a clear format winner. I've never had the money to be an early adopter of any format.

I certainly agree and I am one of the ones stupid enough to want to see both first hand and purchased both. I quickly decided I wanted HD DVD to go bye bye. The fact that only one CE manufacturer has built a player with the HD DVD logo and only one major studio exclusively supports HD DVD while the number on Blu-ray in both cases is many times that tells me which group is at fault. It sure seems to me when there is a disagreement with a large percentage in favor of one over the other that huge majority should rule in consumer audio video formats.

I have no problem with HD DVD in terms of quality or with Toshiba in how they have promoted and supported the format, just find it stupid beyond belief that the format ever launched against such odds in the first place. The resulting mass confusion and the fact the market has avoided both in great numbers confirms the fact it wasn't a good move.

So far I haven't seen this brought up ANYWHERE but while I'm more of a Blu-Ray supporter than an HD one I have to point this out:

Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time.

and

"When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that," Smith said.

Of course there'll be more consumers who rent BR since there are MORE titles available on that one. It only seems like logic to me!!! However, I seriously hope that either we get universal players or one format wins (preferably sooner than later!)

If HD-DVD is going to go away, I hope it goes away QUICKLY!!!
